See Lima, Cusco & Mystical Machu Picchu

Tour historic Lima, venture to the spectacular Valle Sagrado, travel by train to awe-inspiring Machu Picchu and explore Cusco.

About Your Trip

This expansive DreamTrip to Peru begins in and around historic Lima, where you’ll see Parque del Amor (Love Park) in Miraflores, Huaca Pucllana (the ceremonial center of the Lima culture), a cathedral and convent, a pre-Inca pyramid and the Museo Larco (Larco Museum). Then board a plane for the short flight to Cusco, from which you’ll journey to the Valle Sagrado (Sacred Valley) amid the beautiful Andean landscape. Feed the friendly llamas and alpacas, and see locals weaving and dyeing traditional textiles.

You’ll also visit the colonial town of Písac and its ruins — Inca Písac, perched atop a hill at the valley’s entrance — and visit the impressive Museo Inkariy. After a comfortable night in Cusco, continue exploring the Valle Sagrado, including the phenomenon of the terraces at Moray (it is unknown how and why they were made) and the Maras salt mines, and finally the village of Ollantaytambo, inhabited since the time of the Incas. Then board a train for a scenic journey to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, with its numerous terraces, ceremonial shrines, steps and more. In Cusco, continue your sweeping adventure with visits to the Sacsayhuaman Archeological Park, the Inca shrine Q’enqo, Puca Pucara viewpoint and Tambomachay. Back in the city for the afternoon, explore San Cristobal Plaza and the main square, Santo Domingo Church and Convent, San Blas neighborhood, Inca Roca Palace and the iconic 12 Angle Stone.

What we love:
• Lima’s pre-Columbian heritage mingles with today’s tidy streets, parks and ocean views, along with thriving arts-fashion scenes and culinary wonders.
• To this day, no one knows the exact former use of Machu Picchu, built in the 15th century and later abandoned. It features intricate dry-stone walls with huge polished blocks fused without mortar. The fascinating structures incorporate astronomical alignments and panoramic views.
• Cusco, a stunning destination in its own right, serves as the gateway to Valle Sagrado with its landscape of everything from mountain peaks to orchid-rich cloud forests — an enchanted place where wild carnivals and fiestas once merged with pagan traditions and Catholic ritual.

This trip will close by July 5.

Destination

Lima serves as the capital and largest city of Peru, sitting on the arid Pacific coast and nestled in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers. It is home to the preeminent Museo Larco collection of pre-Columbian art, and its well-preserved colonial center sits amid a bustling metropolis.

The ruins of Machu Picchu perch on a mountain ridge above the Valle Sagrado in the Urubamba Province of Peru. Built in the 15th century, Machu Picchu’s exact use remains a mystery, but most archaeologists believe it was built as an estate for the Incan emperor Pachacuti. More than 200 structures were built here, cleverly constructed to prevent damage from earthquakes and heavy rainfall.

Cusco was the historic capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th through 16th centuries, ending with the Spanish conquest. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city contains an abundance of Spanish architecture from the days of early colonialization. Its charms are such that some 2 million travelers visit the city each year.
